I started my career in sales and recruiting two decades ago believing that all it took to get ahead was grit, hard work, and the willingness to grind it out. The rest would come, right? Too many of us have been socialized to think this way and are coming to the conclusion that the meritocracy that we were sold doesn’t exist for people who look like us.

Not only did I realize that honoring my boundaries could help me achieve more, but also that my time and input was valued more by others when I valued myself! I set my mind to learning about myself and how my strengths would allow me to strategically navigate many different personalities with widely varying internal drivers. I helped hire and develop diverse teams of people with many different lived experiences across disciplines, worked with business leaders to help them uncover systemic biases, and advocated to ensure that employees were rewarded equitably for the value they brought to the table. The math wasn’t always mathing, and I made it my business to speak up about it.

I also discovered as a mentor and people manager that what brings me the greatest joy is helping others to own their greatness, unblock themselves, and realize all of the success and fulfillment they deserve. Over the course of working with thousands of professionals in my HR career and connecting them with opportunities that light them up, I came to realize that understanding people and aligning them to the work they want to do is a gift I have.
